Beat the Street – Intelligent Health’s innovative walking and cycling initiative – has helped communities across the world transform their health as it reaches its one millionth participant.
In 95 towns, cities and boroughs, Beat the Street has helped people of all ages and ability make lasting changes to their behaviour through a fun, free game. The programme – which has received accolades from Nesta, WHO and UK Active – sees whole communities turned into a giant walking and cycling game where schools, workplaces and community groups compete to see who can travel the furthest over a six-week period.
Players earn points and win prizes for themselves and their team by tapping contactless cards against sensors found around their area. Beat the Street removes common barriers to physical activity by encouraging people to take part in a game with their friends and family and can see up to 25% of local residents join in the challenge.
Developed by Dr William Bird MBE to get people moving and connected to each other and their environment, Beat the Street has continuously developed to help engage more people and achieve a wide range of outcomes including improved air quality, social cohesion and mental health. The first ever scheme in 2011 had just 185 participants while our recent Beat the Street game in Swindon saw nearly 32,000 people walk, run and cycle 313,000 miles together.
