IoT Smart City Challenge Weekend
March 17 @ 9:00 am - March 18 @ 5:00 pm
Ever wanted to be a start-up? This could be your weekend!
The Reading Smart City Challenge Weekend event on the 17-18 March aims to accelerate SME development of IoT solutions for this project. We are looking for solutions which will address a wide range of issues around the improving the environment, improving health and reducing accidents.
It’s not just another Hackathon where random people assemble and form teams, stay up all weekend and deliver a ‘concept’ on the Sunday. This is about producing outcomes. Solutions must be able to demonstrate that they address a real need have a realistic business model to take them to market.
Teams of up to four people will be invited to apply for one of ten places available at the event. Applications are open to start-up or small businesses, with each team needing both technology and business skill sets.
Successful ideas could be adopted, funded and developed as part of the Thames Valley Berkshire LEP commitment of £1.733m to a ‘Smart City Cluster’ project, which covers Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham and West Berkshire. The purpose of the project is to support the development of smart city solutions in order to improve the quality of life in Berkshire.
We are busy preparing for the weekend, pulling together mentors, speakers and kit. Attending events to spread the word, and find those start-up teams. We’ve got a bus from Reading Buses with Study, Games and Lounge zones all will be revealed at a later date! The lovely people at Austin Fraser are kindly letting us use their fantastic offices to run the event from. We’ve already had some great team applications so we are on course for a fantastic weekend.
LoRa and Sigfox are being rolled out as part of the project this year, which will extend the potential to deploy low cost smart sensors. It will also provide the opportunity to implement low cost solutions across a wide area and may make solutions viable that have not been in the past.
The weekend culminates in a pitch, where teams will present their IoT-led solutions to a team of judges.
Closing date for entries is the 2nd March 2018. Successful applicants will be notified on the 5th March 2018 when we will issue full briefing documents.
